Amit Mishra announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Former India wrist spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, September 4. Mishra represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is and scalped 156 wickets in total. He made his international debut in 2003 against South Africa and registered figures of 1/29 in five overs.

Mishra further made his Test debut in 2008 against Australia and impressed with a five-wicket haul (5/71). He registered figures of 7/106 in the match and played a key role in India's 320-run victory. The 42-year-old last played for India in 2016, during the 5th Test against England in Chennai and scalped two wickets during the fixture as India won the series 4-0.

Mishra is also counted amongst one of the most successful bowlers to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 42-year-old is the eighth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament's history with 174 scalps from 162 matches. He also holds the record for most hat-tricks in the history of IPL, having achieved the feat thrice in 2008, 2011 and 2013.

"Today, after 25 years, I announce my retirement from cricket — a game that has been my first love, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy. This journey has been filled with countless emotions — moments of pride, hardship, learning, and love. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, my coaches, support staff, colleagues, and most importantly, the fans, whose faith and support gave me strength at every step," wrote Mishra on his X account.

"From the struggles and sacrifices in the early days to the unforgettable moments on the field, every chapter has been an experience that has shaped me as a cricketer and as a person. To my family — thank you for standing firmly by my side through the highs and lows. To my teammates and mentors — thank you for making this journey so special. As I close this chapter, my heart is full of gratitude and love. Cricket has given me everything, and now, I look forward to giving back to the game that made me who I am," he added.

Mishra was also a part of India's ICC Champions Trophy 2013 winning squad and scalped 10 wickets in their 2014 T20 World Cup campaign, where they finished as runners-up. He also equalled Javagal Srinath's world record for most wickets (18) in a bilateral ODI series, achieving the feat against New Zealand in 2016.

Mishra last played IPL in 2024 for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and played just one match, where he picked one wicket. He further failed to make it to the final list of players for the IPL 2025 auction. It remains to be seen if Mishra opts to play in foreign T20 leagues after announcing his retirement.
