Bangladesh kept their Super Four hopes alive with a hard-fought eight-run victory over Afghanistan in a must-win Group B clash at the Asia Cup 2025. After seven largely one-sided matches, this contest provided the first real thriller in Group B, with Bangladesh claiming their first-ever win over Afghanistan away from home. The victory also extended Afghanistan's struggles against full-member sides, marking the 12th time they have failed to chase a target above 140 in T20Is.
Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 154/5, powered by opener Tanzid Hasan, who smashed a 52 off 31 balls. Tanzid shared a 63-run partnership with Saif Hassan (30), providing the Tigers a solid platform. His attacking strokeplay, which included four boundaries and two towering sixes, helped Bangladesh seize the initiative early against Fazalhaq Farooqi and AM Ghazanfar.
Afghanistan responded with disciplined spin, led by skipper Rashid Khan (2/26) and Noor Ahmad (2/23), backed by Azmatullah Omarzai (3-0-19-1). Rashid broke the opening partnership by deceiving Saif Hassan, while Litton Das and Shamim Hossain fell under pressure, leaving Bangladesh at 121 for four in the 16th over. Contributions from the lower order pushed the total to a competitive 154.
Afghanistan's chase never got off to a strong start. Nasum Ahmed trapped Atal for a golden duck on the first ball of the innings and followed it with a wicket-maiden over. Despite a dropped catch of Ibrahim Zadran in the next over, Nasum struck again, dismissing him LBW. Afghanistan managed only 27 runs in the powerplay and lost key wickets, including Gulbadin and Gurbaz, who had looked solid with 35 off 31 balls. Omarzai offered a glimmer of hope with 30 off 16 balls, including two sixes in the 14th over, but Taskin Ahmed dismissed him with a clever slower ball.
The death overs were tense and dramatic. Nurul produced a brilliant run out to remove Karim Janat, and Mustafizur Rahman trapped Afghanistan's last hope, Rashid Khan, with a wide, slower yorker. Mustafizur finished with three wickets, while Taskin, Nasum, and Rishad claimed two each. Afghanistan fell just eight runs short despite a late surge by Noor Ahmad, whose two sixes in the final over slightly reduced the margin and may impact the net run rate of Bangladesh.
