Bruno Fernandes' late penalty seals Manchester United's 3-2 win vs Burnley

Manchester United finally broke their winless run in the Premier League 2025–26 season, edging Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ dramatic stoppage-time penalty.

The Portuguese captain converted from the spot after VAR confirmed a foul on Amad Diallo, who had his shirt tugged inside the box. Fernandes, under pressure after a costly miss against Fulham earlier in the campaign, struck low and true to Martin Dubravka’s right, giving the Burnley keeper no chance. The goal sparked relief inside Old Trafford and ensured Ruben Amorim celebrated his first league victory in his first full season as a manager.

United had twice taken the lead only to be pegged back. Their opener arrived midway through the first half when Casemiro’s powerful header crashed off the post before Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen bundled the rebound into his own net. But the joy was short-lived as new signing Matheus Cunha, lively in attack, limped off with a hamstring injury that left the home crowd subdued.

Burnley found a route back when Lyle Foster escaped Mathijs de Ligt’s marking to head past Andre Onana. United responded swiftly, Diogo Dalot’s accurate cross met by Bryan Mbeumo, who marked his home debut with a close-range finish.

The visitors showed admirable fight, equalising again when Jadon Anthony reacted quickest to a loose ball during a chaotic set-piece. With momentum shifting, United were forced onto the back foot, defending deep as Burnley pressed for a winner. At the other end, substitute Benjamin Sesko had opportunities in the air but could not convert.

The decisive moment arrived in added time. Diallo’s direct running unsettled Burnley’s backline, drawing the foul that gifted Fernandes his chance to atone. His calm conversion ensured United avoided another early-season setback.

The victory was more than just three points. After a shock League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town and criticism of their lack of sharpness in attack, Amorim’s side desperately needed a result to steady confidence.
