Clarke Urges India to Unleash Kuldeep Yadav in Edgbaston Test
As India prepares for the pivotal second Test against England at Edgbaston, changes to the playing XI are anticipated following their defeat in the series opener. The potential resting of Jasprit Bumrah to manage his workload is a significant point of discussion. With Gautam Gambhir leading the team management, more adjustments could be made to discover a stronger combination to level the series.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has strongly advocated for one specific change. He believes that wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav should be included in the next match. During an appearance on the Beyond23 Podcast, Clarke stated that picking Kuldeep is a clear decision.
India's bowling attack struggled to make a significant impact at Headingley. Although Bumrah demonstrated his skill, the supporting bowlers – Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna – struggled to maintain pressure and consistently take wickets. Clarke suggests Kuldeep could be the solution.
“Bowling-wise, I do not want to single out anyone for blame, but India have to play Kuldeep Yadav. He is a genuine wicket-taker and could have made a big difference in the last Test,” Clarke said.

Clarke also noted that India sometimes overemphasizes batting depth, potentially at the expense of a frontline spinner. He emphasized that in English conditions, selecting bowlers capable of taking 20 wickets should be the main focus.
Former England batter Nick Knight supports Kuldeep’s inclusion as well. Knight suggested that England’s aggressive batting style could be challenged by Kuldeep’s variations, particularly if the Edgbaston pitch provides any assistance to spin. Knight believes that if Kuldeep finds his rhythm, he could create pivotal moments in the match.
The team announcement for the second Test is highly anticipated, with increasing calls for Kuldeep’s inclusion in the squad.
