Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has suggested that Akash Deep could be a suitable replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test against England in Birmingham, should Bumrah be rested. Pathan believes the Bengal pacer possesses similar qualities to Mohammed Shami, making him a potentially potent threat.
Irfan Pathan highlighted how Akash Deep can provide a Shami-like threat with the ball, with his straight-seamed deliveries being a possible threat against the aggressive England batting unit.
While India showcased strong batting in the first Test, with centuries from Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the bowling unit, with the exception of Jasprit Bumrah, struggled to maintain consistency. The team management is carefully monitoring Bumrah's workload after his injury, making his availability for the second Test uncertain.
"If Bumrah is not there, then who should come into the side in his place? Akash Deep, from what's been seen in the nets, seems to be getting into his rhythm. I feel that he is the Shami mould type of bowler," Irfan Pathan stated, emphasizing Akash Deep's potential impact.
Pathan further elaborated that Akash Deep's bowling style, which relies on seam and swing, could prove more effective in English conditions compared to bowlers who focus on hitting the deck hard. His ability to generate late movement with straight seam deliveries could pose a significant challenge to England's aggressive batsmen.
"His straight seam deliveries can trouble the England batters, especially when it comes to late movement. If you are going aggressive, this could be a problem... if Bumrah is not playing, then it should be Akash Deep who should come in his place," he added.
India's assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, conveyed the team's confidence in their bowling unit, asserting that they are not overly dependent on Bumrah and believe they can compete effectively even without him.
"It is, but we also feel we can go 1-1 or keep the score at 1-0 without Jasprit... We're going to need him at some stage as well. You've got to decide when you're going to play your strongest suit," ten Doeschate explained, highlighting the team's strategic approach.
The final decision regarding Bumrah's participation will be made on the day of the match.
